2.4 Million Syrian Refugees Returned to their Homes – Syria at UN

Syrian Ambassador at United Nations Security Council Bassam Sabbagh السفير السوري لدى مجلس اﻷمن الدولي بسام الصباغ

Syria slammed the western countries for politicizing humanitarian aid and their coercive measures against the Syrian people in order to prevent the Syrian state from defeating terrorism and establish security all over the country in order to allow the return of the Syrian refugees to their homes. Despite the destructive western efforts, the Syrian state with its allies managed to return 2.4 million refugees to their permanent homes in Syria, Syria’s ambassador to the United Nations Bassam Sabbagh said.

Sabbagh emphasized in his statement to the United Nations Security Council session yesterday 29 August 2022 Syria’s concern in the implementation of the mechanism of UNSC Resolution 2642 adopted on July 13th to observe the advance in the projects promised by the Council to justify the resolution.

UNSC Resolution 2642 extended the lifeline supplies for Al Qaeda in Idlib for an additional 6 months with the western countries pressing about the humanitarian justifications for the supply line while Syria considered it a breach of its sovereignty and extending the suffering of the tens of thousands of Syrian families under the occupation of NATO member state Turkey and its plethora of terrorist groups spearheaded by Al Qaeda Levant (aka Nusra Front, HTS) and ISIS (ISIL, Daesh).

The Syrian ambassador related the difficulties faced by the various United Nations bodies and organizations in their work to alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people to the politicizing of the humanitarian and development work by the western countries, namely the US-led NATO member countries. There have been insignificant funding to the Syria Response Plan by the countries that pushed for UNSC Resolution 2642, the ambassador noted.

Illegal unilateral coercive measures imposed by the United States of America and its allies against Syria (wrongly dubbed sanctions) continue to add to the suffering of the Syrian people as a result of the shortages in food, medicine, fuel, and other basics that has a cascading effect on all aspects of life for the Syrians, it’s further escalated by the US occupation and stealing of Syria’s oil, gas, wheat, and cotton, the Syrian ambassador told the council with the representatives of the criminal states present.

The quantity of Syrian oil stolen by the US occupation forces has reached 66 thousand barrels a day, in the last few days alone, more than 500 tankers loaded with stolen Syrian oil were smuggled by the US Army out of Syria toward its bases in Iraq, Sabbagh highlighted.

Reminding the Council of the UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS) of failure in its obligation to help the Syrian authorities clear the areas previously infested by US-sponsored terrorists of the mines and explosives planted in it in abundance, the Syrian ambassador said that those mines and explosives continue to pose a significant threat to the lives of the Syrian people, especially the children. Syria and UNMAS signed a memorandum of understanding in July 2018 in which the UN body is supposed to extend adequate help to the Syrian state to remove those mines.

Despite the MOU signed, the UNMAS has been unable thus far to extend any proper help to Syria. The ambassador called on the UNSC and its relevant body to set a clear timeframe for its work to help clear the infested areas to save the Syrians’ lives and provide a safe return to the refugees and displaced to their homes and resume their normal lives.

Syria’s ambassador to the UNSC affirmed the necessity to respect Syria’s sovereignty and its territorial integrity by ending the illegal foreign occupation of parts of its land and the presence of their proxy terrorist groups and separatist militias. He stressed the need of ending the Israeli repeated bombing of Syria and the immediate ending of the US-imposed economic terrorism and collective punishment carried out by the USA and the European Union against the Syrian people.

The Syrian ambassador reminded the Council of Syria’s call on countries that support terrorist groups and separatist militias that plunder Syria’s wealth to pay compensation to the Syrian people because looting these national resources is a violation of international law.

Concluding his statement, and in response to the representative of the United States and his attempt to justify the attacks of the American occupation forces on Deir Ezzor Governorate, Sabbagh said: The American forces are illegally present on Syrian territory without the request or approval of the Syrian state, and therefore their presence represents a clear violation of the Charter of the United Nations, international law and relevant Security Council resolutions. Which stresses respect for Syria’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, pointing out that the US delegate’s invocation of the provisions of Article 51 of the Charter and what he called (the right of self-defense) represents legal deception and political insolence.

Trump: ‘We are keeping (Syria’s) oil because I like oil’

These same hypocrite western countries flooding the United Nations and every international arena around the globe with their crocodile tears over their fake concerns for the humanitarian situation in the very recent Ukrainian conflict in which they played the main part in instigating and fueling, and they themselves impose the harshest measures against the Syrian people and support terrorist groups, help Israel bomb Syria repeatedly, and hinder the return of the Syrian refugees and displaced.

They steal Syrian food and oil, and they prevent international bodies from carrying out their work to help alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people, then these western countries expect the world to accept their ‘values’ which they have invaded and destabilized countries and killed, maimed, and displaced millions of people to force-export those values across the globe.
