Ban Ki-Moon: Use of force in Syria only legal in self-defence or with UNSC authorization.

UN Chief Ban Ki-moon said yesterday that the use of force against Syria is only legal in terms of self-defence or with the authorization by the UN Security Council (UNSC). This statements by the UN Secretary General came after the information that Ban Ki-moon wants to accelerate the laboratory test of the samples from Syria in regards of the alleged use of chemical weapons (e.g. Sarin nerve agent) near the Syrian capital, Damascus.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon had a telephone conversation with Ake Sellström, one of the heads of the recent team of UN experts in Syria beside Angela Kane. Sellström is a Swedish expert in arms, especially in chemical weapons, and was also one of the UN inspectors who have examined the use of chemical weapons in Iraq in the 1990s.

The UN has appointed him again in March 2013 for a investigative mission in Syria about the alleged use of chemical weapons in the Syrian conflict. Ban Ki-moon spoke with the Swedish arms expert Ake Sellström about the possibility to accelerate the laboratory tests of the samples from Syria. The samples from Syria are currently investigated and tested in a Swedish laboratory.

The UN Chief made some new remarks after the statements by his spokesperson in terms of the telephone conversation with the head of the UN mission to Syria. Ban Ki-moon said that the use of force in Syria is legal only when in self-defence or with the authorization by the UN Security Council (UNSC). He also underlined that he wants to bring the issue of the escalating crisis in Syria and the increased rhetoric of war against Damascus to the top of the G20 summit’s agenda.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also stated on Tuesday that the investigators of the United Nations (UN) are set to return to Syria in order to investigate further cases of the alleged use of chemical weapons (e.g. poison gas / Sarin nerve agent) in the Arab country.

Ban Ki-moon then said that in case that the UN inspectors will confirm the use of chemical weapons in Syria, the UN Security Council should overcome its differences and take action. The UN Security Council (UNSC) has long been deadlocked in terms of the Syrian conflict and it is to assume that Russia and China will again block any anti-Syria resolution at the UNSC.

The UN Chief Ban Ki-moon said finally that any use of chemical weapons by anyone in Syria is a serious violation of international law and represents a war crime. The perpetrators behind the use of chemical weapons in Syria must be brought to justice and there should be no impunity, according to Ban Ki-moon. An Iranian legislator has recently also demanded that the foreign countries which made it possible for the foreign-terrorists in Syria to use chemical weapons and to carry out chemical attacks in the Arab country should be held responsible for this support.

Further, it would have been nice to see Ban Ki-moon also speaking about the war crimes of other nations in recent years and to call for justice in terms of the war crimes and violations of international law by the US administration, France, Britain and other governments. Not to mention that UN Chief Ban Ki-moon shall condemn the support with weapons and money by e.g. Saudi Arabia for the foreign-backed terrorists fighting in Syria against the secular government in Damascus. These double-standards and wilfully forgetfulness is really not the way it should be.
