Jaafari: Lift Coercive Unilateral Sanctions against Syria that Hinder Tackling COVID, Development

US and EU sanctions against Syria - Unilateral Coercive Measures

In response to the United Nations call for the suspension of unilateral sanctions of member states during the global “state of emergency amid COVID-19 pandemic,” Syria’s Permanent Representative, H.E. Bashar al Jaafari, addressed the small group of the concerned, during a video meeting 2 June.

Despite the General Assembly claim that “We’re all in this together,” and even Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ call for a minimal temporary suspension, the NATO clique running the UN continues its illicit breach of the UN Charter.

The United States and European Union unilateral sanctions against Syria, and a number of other countries, outside the United Nations Security Council’s agreement are illegal and rightfully considered ‘Economic Terrorism’, as coined by the Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif.

The main harmed who suffer the most of these sanctions are the ordinary citizens of the targeted countries, but that’s not an issue for the western self-proclaimed civilized world as long as their goals in trying to remain on top of the world are achieved. Coupled with a blockade and looting riches of the targeted country adds much more suffering to the citizens of that country, then the latest war crime of burning the wheat crops as they are just ready for harvest, and this is exactly what’s happening to the Syrian people.

Worth noting that instead of responding positively to the calls to end the sanctions or even relieve them temporarily to enable the targeted countries properly combat the global pandemic, the USA’s regime of Donald Trump has passed what’s called Caesar’s Act intensifying the sanctions against Syria and whoever deals with Syria, the state, armed forces, and the people.

It’s also worth noting that areas under the control of al-Qaeda and the Kurdish separatist militias are exempted from these sanctions!
