Syria: UN Accepts Invitation about Chemical Weapons Allegations

The Syrian Ambassador to the United Nations (UN), Bashar Ja’afari, invited the Swedish scientist Ake Sellstrom and UN High Representative for Disarmament Angela Kane to visit Syria over the chemical weapons attack by foreign-backed militants against Syrian civilians and soldiers in the area of the city of Aleppo some months ago.

Yesterday, the spokesman for the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Martin Nesirky, confirmed the invitation of the Swedish scientist Ake Sellstrom and UN High Representative for Disarmament Angela Kane by the Syrian Ambassador to the UN, Bashar Ja’afari, over the issue of chemical weapons, while Russia says there is no doubt and even first-hand evidence that the foreign-backed militants have already used chemical weapons (sarin nerve gas) in Syria.

Meanwhile, the United Nations has finally accepted the invitation by Bashar Ja’afari and the Syrian government in the capital Damascus for these two senior UN officials to debate the allegations of the use of chemical weapons in the Arab nation.

The spokesman of the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Martin Nesirky, said yesterday that Ake Sellstrom and UN High Representative for Disarmament Angela Kane have accepted the invitation and that both senior UN officials want to debate the modalities of cooperation that are required for a safe and efficient mission of the United Nations (UN) in Syria in order to investigate the allegations of the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

This is probably a bit strange, assuming that Russian experts already have investigated the samples from the alleged chemical weapons attack near the Syrian city of Aleppo and found traces of sarin. In addition, Russia stated this week already that there are no more doubts that the foreign-backed militants have used chemical weapons in this attack some months ago. It is to assume that Russia will be “very happy” to see how much trust they get by the United Nations for their Russian experts and evidence.

For example, the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said just yesterday (see here) that the evidence, found by Russian experts, shows that the foreign-backed militants and jihadists in Syria have used chemical weapons containing shell and sarin in an attack against Syrian civilians and soldiers.

The Russian Ambassador to the United Nations (UN), Vitaly Churkin, even spoke about first-hand evidence that suggests very direct that the militants and not the Syrian government had produced sarin nerve gas and then used it during an attack near the north-western city of Aleppo in March 2013..

While France, Britain and the Obama administration in Washington still claim that the Syrian government and army would have used chemical weapons against “democratic, peaceful protesters and rebels”.

Politics, in general, is really a great thing, isn’t it?
