Russia: Washington Blackmails Moscow in Terms of Syria

Lavrov Kerry

Syria: US blackmails Russia for the option to use military force against Damascus.

The Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made a very revealing statement in terms of Syria, the US-Russia agreement on the chemical weapons in the Arab country and the upcoming resolution at the UN Security Council (UNSC) on Syria and the deal between Washington and Moscow.

Russia’s Foreign Minister said that the U.S. administration in Washington is pushing Russia into approving the upcoming resolution at the UN Security Council (UNSC) with the reference to the Chapter 7 of the UN Charter that would allow the use of military force against Syria in order to “restore international peace”.

Thus, Washington blackmails Moscow with the demand that Russia should accept a resolution on Syria with the reference to the Chapter 7 of the UN Charter in exchange for the support by the United States in regards of the joining of Syria to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) and the other terms of the US-Russian agreement to put Syria’s chemical weapons arsenal under an international supervision.

The Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the “American partners are starting to blackmail” the administration in Russia. He said:

“Our American partners are starting to blackmail us: ‘If Russia does not support a resolution under Chapter 7, then we will withdraw our support for Syria’s entry into the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). This is a complete departure from what I agreed with Secretary of State John Kerry.” (Lavrov)

And the Chapter 7 of the UN charter would allow a potential use of military force against Syria and thus, the US-led military intervention in the Arab country if, for example, the Syrian government of President al-Assad would “cheat” in terms of the joining of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) and the disarmament of its chemical weapons stockpiles.

While it was to foresee that the negotiations between the United States and Russia in regards of the Syrian conflict and the disarmament of the Syrian chemical weapons arsenals under the agreement between Washington and Moscow were not completely finalized, the new statement by Russia’s Foreign Minister Lavrov certainly reveal the usual way how the U.S. administration tries to pursue its policy on the international platform. Blackmailing, threats and propaganda.

In regards of the upcoming resolution at the UN Security Council (UNSC) on Syria’s chemical weapons arsenal and the alleged agreement between Washington and Moscow, it seems to now get even more interesting than it already was, because it was assumed that the resolution would come through at the UNSC this time – without a reference to the Chapter 7 of the UN Charter, which would then allow the use of force against Syria to “restore international peace” again.

Kerry: We tried all methods and failed. Lavrov: I warned your predecessor you’ll fail.

Sergey Lavrov has clearly stated that Washington is blackmailing Moscow in regards of the recent agreement on Syria’s chemical weapons and the joining of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) by the government of President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus. If Russia agrees on a resolution on Syria that includes a reference to the Chapter 7 of the UN Charta and thus would allow Washington the use of military force against Damascus in case if e.g. Assad “cheats” in terms of Syria’s disarmament of its chemical stockpiles, then Moscow gets it support for the general plan surrounding the disarmament and the upcoming duties for the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in Syria.

It is probably also about the question which side will finally be involved on ground in Syria in the control and observation of the disarmament of Syria’s chemical weapons. However, it seems clear that Russia is not interested to have NATO forces on Syrian soil, while the United States seem to not like the idea of Russian units in Syria.

So or so, the facts remain – the United States play a dirt game in terms of Syria, and Moscow won`t be happy about the situation to get blackmailed by Washington.
