Syria Conference: Brahimi Not Part of US-Russian Meeting

Meeting Room

Geneva 2: Moscow and Washington talk about Syria conference.

While the Syrian government in the capital Damascus has already stated that it is willing and ready to participate in the planned international peace conference (Geneva 2) on the conflict in the Arab nation without any preconditions in order to help to end the conflict and crisis in Syria, the so-called external “Syrian opposition” remains divided and causes that the date of such a next conference on the Syrian conflict in Geneva is not yet announced.

However, some rumours say that Russia and the United States might agree that October could be the month for the next conference on Syria in Geneva (Geneva 2) because there are already too much events on the international platform in September this year. One has to make priorities…

Further, as mentioned, the date of the long-delayed next conference in Geneva on Syria keeps slipping because the so-called external and foreign-backed “Syrian National Coalition” (SNC) / “Syrian opposition” (staged political bunch) remains strongly divided over their participation in the second talks in Geneva on the Syrian conflict. However, this comes as no surprise.

When the so-called “Syrian opposition” would have ever cared about the Syrian population in Syria, the situation in the Arab nation would already be in a different situation than it is for the majority of the Syrian people.

A new statement by the United Nations (UN) clarifies the situation about the UN-Arab League Special Representative on Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, and his alleged participation in the meeting of higher-ranking officials from Russia and the United States in The Hague (Netherlands) next week in order to negotiate about important details of the preparations of the second conference in Geneva on the Syrian conflict.

The statement by the UN says that the UN-Arab League Special Representative on Syria Lakhdar Brahimi will not participate in the talks between the higher-ranking officials from Washington and Moscow on the ongoing conflict and crisis in Syria.

The statement also says that Lakhdar Brahimi has welcomed this meeting of Russia and the United States in The Hague (Netherlands) next week in order to find solutions for important topics around the preparations of the next Geneva conference on the Syrian conflict, but that the UN-Arab League Special Representative on Syria will not join the meeting for these negotiations between Moscow and Washington, and thus, Brahimi is not participating in the upcoming the bilateral talks between Moscow and Washington.

The UN statement further stated that the UN-Arab League Special Representative on Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, is in a constant contact with the authorities of the United States and Russia and that there is the possibility that another meeting to further preparations of the Geneva 2-conference on Syria might be held in the near future.

However, the UN statement does not mention any date of place of a possible further meeting to negotiate about the Syrian conflict and the modalities of the second Syria conference in Geneva.

At least, after an unnamed Russian diplomat had said yesterday that Brahimi will participate in the meeting of Russia and the United States in The Hague next week, it is clear now that the UN-Arab League envoy in terms of the Syrian conflict will not participate in this meeting of higher-ranking US and Russian officials in The Hague (Netherlands).
