Russia: UN Inspectors Must Return to Syria

Syria: Terrorists attacked Residence of UN Inspectors (Source: FNA)

Russia urges the “immediate return” of the UN inspectors to Syria.

It is no secret that the Russian government in Moscow supports the idea of the return of the UN inspectors to Syria and several Russian Ministers, including the Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, have already demanded the return of the UN inspectors to Syria in order to continue their investigation of the use of chemical weapons in several regions of the Arab country in recent weeks.

Of course, it is important that the UN inspectors will return to Syria to continue their investigations of areas where chemical weapons were allegedly used in attacks.

Although the published UN report by the chemical inspectors includes some contradictions and although several statements by the members of the UN mission were a bit questionable, it is important that the UN inspectors return to Syria to continue their investigations – for example, finally in Khan al-Assal, near the Syrian city of Aleppo.

It would be quite important that the UN inspectors take samples from the area of Khan al-Assal, where terrorists have used chemicals in an attack against Syrian civilians and soldiers in March 2013. According to a Russian investigation, it is already confirmed that sarin was used in this attack.

However, Russia has already handed over the results of the investigation of samples from Khan al-Assal (Khan al-Asal) to the United Nations (UN) some weeks ago, but it seems now, and especially after the release of the report by the inspectors, that the UN was a dead end for the Russian investigation and results about the use of CW agents in Khan al-Assal.

At least, the United Nations (UN) seem to hush up the Russian results of the investigation of samples from Khan al-Assal (located in the countryside of Aleppo / Halab) and Moscow was probably already pissed about that.

After the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has recently urged that the UN mission returns to Syria, also the Russian permanent representative to the UN, Vitaly Churkin, said it now that the UN inspectors have to return to Syria.

And the Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin even called for an “immediate return” of the inspectors from the United Nations (UN) to Syria in order to continue their investigations about the use of chemical weapons in the Syrian conflict and to conduct more investigations in additional locations in the Arab country.

Chemicals in Syria. Made in Saudi Arabia.

The Russian envoy to the UN, Vitaly Churkin, added that the inspection mission of the United Nations (UN) should also investigate “the incident on March 19 near Aleppo (Khan al-Assal) as well as incidents of intoxication of Syrian government troops on August 22 and 24-25.”

Russia’s Ambassador added that Moscow hopes that the full implementation of the mandate for the mission, headed by the Swedish arms expert Ake Sellström, will finally deliver an objective picture about the events in Syria.

This statement is understandable in view of Russia because Moscow has already (and in principle) said that the published UN report is not really objective.

Further, the statements by the Russian envoy to the United Nations (UN), Vitaly Churkin, is also valid and reasonable. The UN mission has to continue in Syria and this has to happen soon and not in some months.
